I have a wireless printer connected to my network and it prints from my laptop perfectly every time. My Dad just bought a laptop and we share the same wireless broadband connection, again with no problems. The thing that puzzles me is that he can't print to the wireless printer unless my laptop is switched on. I have gone through all the network and sharing options I can see and have set the thing up to be shared by everyone and anyone. Yet still he can only print if my laptop is switched on. This seems a bit pointless to me. Anyone else had this issue in the past? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Is he definately connecting to the share on the printer directly, or have you set up printer sharing on your laptop as well, in which case he may be connecting to the share on your laptop instead of the printer, hence needing your laptop to be powered up.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try it out tomorrow when he's back here with his laptop.

Still no joy. I have both laptops set up to share the printer with absolutely anyone and still the printer will not work unless my machine is on. Can this be correct? I've been through every printer option I can find but I keep getting the message (in Vista) that the printer sharing wont work if my machine is switched off or sleeping! I thought it would be a piece of cake setting this up but it was easier installing my old laser printer on my 10 year old desktop!

That sounds exactly like your problem though. As mentioned above, if it's a proper wireless printer then you should be able to connect directly to it on your network. Setting up the printer as sharable on one of the computers means that this computer is required to be on if another computer is connecting to it

Still no joy, I think it must just be a rubbish printer as we have tried everything to no avail. Not to worry, we have a couple of older printers which can be connected directly. Thanks for your assistance anyway, much appreciated.
